Great show

Posted by Feral Beast in

Hello.

Last night I saw a show called TWO IN THE TOP END( if you want to learn more about it, then click the high-lighted words).

It's a really good show about two good mates, Tim Flannery and John Doyle, going around in the top end of Australia.
Last night they went to a town called Normanton (this link will tell you more about the town), and there was this great big, full-scale model of this Croc that was shot in 1957, and it was the size of a small car!
It was shot by a woman called Krys and that's what they called the croc.

They also went along a beach that had been turned to stone, and it looked like a normal beach!
When they got on their hands and knees, they got a big hunk of it out, and the sand turned out not to be sand, but millions of tiny crushed shells and normal shells.
The shells were cemented together by calcium from fresh water and sea water mixing with the sand.

They went to a place called Riversleigh and showed a fossil of a croc's skull that was in a rock. They said that the croc was thousands of years old and that it ate differently to salt water croc's today. The fossil croc would slice hunks of meat off it's prey instead of doing a death roll like they do today.

Anzac Sub.

Hello.

Last night I saw a show about the A.E.2.
The A.E.2 was an Australian Sub that was in Gallipoli and helped the Anzacs land by scaring off a ship that was 12k's away from the landing site had been shelling them.(now, I know 12k's sounds like along way from the landing site for a ship to shell but the thing is that ship had enough fire power to do that.)

The A.E.2 was the only Sub to go almost around the world of the time.
It had a very smart crew and Captain, at one point the Sub had been seen by the enemy and had to go down, and after that there was all these different ships searching for them, the crew also had to stay as still as they could, there was also a ship that was looking for them(in those days there wasn't sonar so they had to use a grappling-hook) with a grappling-hook that the enemy would have sent bombs down if it were to catch on something, but it only scraped along the hull of the Sub, but luckily didn't catch on the hull.

Prehistoric animals

Posted by Feral Beast in ,

Hello again, I'm going to talk about the Australian mega fauna.

My fave animals from that time is the Marsupial Lion, the giant goanna, flesh eating 'roos, giant wombats, the three meter high emu's, and all the other animals from that time.
For those of you who don't know what a Marsupial Lion is, it's a giant possum.
I'll tell you a bit about it.
This great big possum-like animal was a carnivore.
It had giant teeth that would slice it's prey in half like a warm knife going through butter.
It's other weapon was a big claw on it's thumb.
It used it's claw in fights and for killing it's prey.
It was also as big as a leopard.
It's skull was like a cats.
It was also around when the Aborigines first came to Australia, it was a night hunter too, so if a Aborigine walked under a tree that had a Marsupial Lion in it, then the Aborigine would be killed very fast.

Also Tasmanian devils were on the main land and there were also giant roo's and giant crocs and ant eaters.
Marsupials drove out the animals that were not Marsupials for some reason, some people think it's because the Marsupials were much stronger.

Bettina has some photos on her blog that are skeletons of some Megafauna found in a phosphate mine. Click HERE to see her great photos.
