Ned's not guilty again

Posted by Feral Beast in , ,

Hello.
I'm going to talk about the Ned Kelly's trial under the new anti-terrorist laws.

When Ned was caught by the police, he was trying not to end up as Ben Hall did.
He was Australia's Robin Hood, instead of robbing from the rich and keeping the money for himself, he would give the money to the poor.

I'll start with the begging of his story.

At the age of 14 he was put in a lock up for 10 days for a crime that didn't stick.
He'd been in a fight with someone and he had punched that person in self-defense.
At that time the police were corrupt, 'coz there wasn't really much crime in the colony, and so if there isn't much crime, then the police aren't going to get much money, now are they?
So after awhile of this sort of thing going on, he thought, " you want me to do some crime, then I will'' and so he did, but he was being a Robin Hood person.
After awhile the police started hunting him down like a dog.
One day he and his brother Dan went to confront the police when they heard some guns going off, so they went to where the police were camped, and they said, " surrender" and one of them did, but the other one ran into the scrub and pointed a gun at him, but Ned shot him so he wouldn't shoot Ned, while Dan was looking for the other one.
Two other policemen at a near by river heard the gun shots and ran to the camp and tried to take a few pot-shots at him, but Ned killed him in self defense.
The other one was hurt very, very badly and Ned had to put him out of his pain 'coz they were miles away from help.
Ned was then caught a few days later.

Now back to the trial.

The "mock lawyer" ( the lawyers and the judge were real ) said all of this to the jury who were taking it into consideration and once they had talked about it in the other room, they said he would be not guilty under the anti-terrorist laws.

Dad and I were siting in the first row, there were TV cameras everywhere we looked.
There was also a judge, a defendant, and the jury was hand picked out of the audience.
Dad and I came in too early, so we had to wait in a giant waiting room.

It was fun, I had a great time.

I suspect the verdict might have been a bit different if the cameras hadn't been there and Ned Kelley was wearing a turban instead of a bucket.

That's so interesting. I didn't know Ned Kelly had a plea for self-defense. So there is some justification to his being a folk hero. How fabulous.

I wish I could have seen that re-trial of Ned kelly. It sounds fantastic and they came up with the right verdict and everything. What actually happened, sadly, was one enormous tragedy with no resemblance to justice at all.
